The Site
The layout of the site has been the key consideration in planning the regeneration of Greenshaw High School and includes the following elements:
- building orientation carefully considers the surrounding homes
- positioning of the blocks at the centre of the site frees up more space for hard and soft landscaped areas
- retains the majority of mature trees around the boundary with a planting strategy across site which brings better connection to nature
- a new, landscaped central courtyard is created between the blocks, enhancing permeability from Grennell Road and the surrounding school buildings
- the landscape design comprises a series of interconnected character spaces linking the school building to the sports facilities
- increase useable external space and provide access for the community to share
- at the edges of the main central courtyard will be a series of softer more informal spaces for breaks and learning which also provides separation from the buildings
- the planting will be themed to provide opportunities for use in the curriculum for science, art, and humanities in separate garden spaces and will also improve the biodiversity of the site
- different types and scale of spaces are provided around the school to maximise the use of the grounds.
